Welcome Back~ Happy New Year
We are very excited to be starting a new calendar year with you all. As we come back from what we hope was a rejuvenating and connecting time for all. Our week before we left was filled with Concerts and Solstice Celebrations. It was wonderful to see so many family and community members come to be a part of that experience. As we embark on the new year, we are looking forward to many opportunities for authentic learning. With some luck, we will get snow and cold enough weather for skiing, sledding, snowshoeing, and ice skating. Please remember to send kids in with warm enough clothes. A part of what makes us a vibrant learning community is our environment and we take advantage of this all year round, whether students are gathering data for water and soil, observing habitats and food chains, measuring sticks with their own "royal cubit", or studying the different types of bark and some uses - the winter affords us great learning.
Upper Valley Compost Project
We are excited to announce that our school is a participant in the Upper Valley Super Compost Project!
The Upper Valley Super Compost Project is institutionalizing living compost systems into 24 participating school outdoor classrooms.
The goal is to increase real-world problem-solving opportunities, enhance the health of schoolyards, school and community gardens, and save schools money!
On-site compost systems have the potential to shift current organics hauling fees paid by most schools into an investment school staff, students, community engagement and regeneration.
In addition to saving money, compost systems serve as a classroom extension enhancing STEM curriculum and providing a mechanism for a student-run business.
This replicable model will lay a foundation for regions to collaborate in systemic change-making.
The UV Super Compost Project Team is working hard to raise the one-time costs of implementing the project. In addition to federal and state grants, private donors and foundation requests, the UVSCP team has created a crowdfunding campaign to demonstrate the expansive community support to provide schools and students with innovative resources and tools they need to implement solutions to real-world problems like climate change.
