Hello ABS Families,
Thank you to all the family, friends and community that came to our "Lunch with a Loved One" on Wednesday. It was so nice sharing a meal together. Next week is Winter break! We hope you enjoy the week with your families!
STAR Assessments
I want to update you on some of our scores from our STAR assessments. This is our first year with this assessment as a whole school and we are still learning how to use the data to inform our work. That being said, I do want to share some exciting information with you all. At our Open House in the Fall (See ppt slides 15 and 14), we noticed that our expected growth for students was significantly above normal growth (Normal growth for a period of time being 1.0 and our growth in both ELA and Math were at above 1.5). As a school, our focus this year for our Wildly Important Goal is in Reading and we are excited to share that this past testing with our STAR assessment we are continuing to see exceptional growth with 80% of our students growing at or above expectations in reading. This includes over half of our students growing significantly more than their age group peers across the country. Our projected Proficiency Rate is over 70%. I want to take a moment to recognize the exceptional teaching team we have here at ABS- Every classroom has a teacher that is supporting students with high levels of skill and knowledge. As we blend that skill set with the most current research on what children need to thrive, we collaborate with you to adapt our school environment and teaching practices to create a community that thrives.

Day of Play
Our celebration for the International Day of Play has been a huge success. As we allow children to put into practice the many skills of our Leader in Me and CARES, we see children shine in exceptional ways! Over break, we hope you all find time to slow down the pace and enjoy togetherness! We will see you in a Week, ready to be engaged in continuous growth.

February is Dental Health Month!
Students learned about the importance of taking care of their teeth. Healthy food choices, regular dental visits and twice a day brushing and flossing were key points.

ABS Maple sap boiling!
ABS is gearing up for the Maple sugaring season!
Here at ABS we tap trees along the school property, collect the sap, and boil the sap on sight.
Throughout the next 6-8 weeks, students will learn about plant needs, tree identification, maple trees throughout the season as well as the history of maple sugaring. This is a small list of the gained knowledge during this time but it will not be limited to these topics! In previous years we've been fortunate to have a Place Based Coordinator to boil the sap for the classrooms. This year we are looking for more community and parent involvement within our school community. We are calling on you to volunteer for as little or as much time as you are able to assist in keeping our school evaporator fire running. We will provide all the tools and equipment you need. All you need to do is sign up, show up and be comfortable feeding the evaporators small fire with pre-cut wood. The times available are when classes have their place based time and would be joining the volunteer at the evaporator where they may perform an activity, learn more about the tool or collect their classes sap bucket.
